Bruges, Belgium - Sweet Chocolate Fountains and Charming Brick Buildings

Our second day in Bruges started the only way your day should start in Belgium….with a chocolate fountain for breakfast. Not only did they have the usual savory cheeses, crisp breads, and cold cuts all European hotels have. But they offered eggs made to order, fresh coffee and sweet juices, dried fruits, yogurts…k I am getting hungry.

Bruges is a charming little Middle Ages town. It as if the entire city was designed by one designer with a love of painted brick and cute doors. On top of the already quaint town, is a series of canals swerving through the city. So we decided to take a canal cruise…in the rain. Unfortunately during our week long trip the rain was going to be following us to each location. This is going to be a reoccurring theme.

The buildings lining the canals are beautiful. – It is like a fairytale-

We got pretty soaked during our boat ride so we hoped into a coffee shop for a while. Irish and Italian Coffee’s.

After out warm lattes and drying off from the rain, we walked to a chocolate store in the middle of town. Our hotel offered free chocolate tastings with out booking, so of course we were going to check it out.

We then went for lunch. From the outside, this restaurant advertised Belgium favorites. What we found out was that it was run by an old asian couple, who were seriously understaffed. For the sake of our dignity, we will not go into how long we had to wait for our food, the awkward encounters other guests had with the owner, or the disgusting room filled with dirty dishes I saw on the way to the bathroom…we will just leave it at an experience we will never forget. Cause believe me, we tried.

Following lunch we needed some Jesus, so we went to go see the a church with a statue of the Madonna. There was another chapel near by that claimed to have a piece of cloth that had Jesus’s blood on it.

We later got waffles, covered in gooey Nutella.
